High Speed Synch Flash – urban portraits
I recently attended a 1-2-1 training session with Damien Lovegrove as I wanted to learn about using high shutter speeds with speedlight flashguns. I rarely use speedlights as most of my work is studio based, so I decided I wanted to learn more about this technique and I knew that Damien was very good in this area. This need coincided with an email offer from where he was offering 50% off 1-2-1 sessions booked before a certain date – this seemed like an opportunity too good to miss.
The day was great fun and working with model Victoria Bond was a pleasure as she was good spirited, keen and a great model to work with. Above all I tried all different techniques during the day, from natural light, to high speed flash synch flash. I learnt a lot of new things, and realised that I can incorporate some of these techniques into my own photography, which was part of the objective of the exercise. I feel that I want to re-visit nudes in the landscape using the high speed synch flash techniques as it produces a powerful and striking image. I do need to practise with this technique, especially using an aperture of F1.4 and getting things sharp.
