Guest Speaker at Eroticon – March 2012, Bristol, UK

I’m speaking at Eroticon on Saturday 3rd March 2012 in Bristol, so I thought it was time to pull together some ideas and thoughts for the content of what I’m going to talk about. This article is two fold, firstly it will help me to pull my ideas together and to make sure I cover everything and secondly the structure and approach may help others if you’ve been asked to do a similar thing, e.g. give a talk or lecture.

The audience

The audience will be sex bloggers. Who I hear you say. Yes that’s right sex bloggers; people who write, blog or enthuse about sex. Be they Journalists, Writers, Publishers, Reviewers, PR people or Marketeers. They all have one thing in common which is they are all involved, directly or indirectly, with writing about sex in one form or another.

The requirements

I have 60 minutes to talk about photography, which is not very long at all. So it needs to be interesting, informative, fun and hopefully interactive. For this duration of talk I need to cover about 4 to 5 topic areas, any more and I won’t do them justice, any less and they could become labored and may not be of interest to some of the audience. If you have a mixture of topics then some people will find at least a couple of them interesting if not all of them.

My objectives

To inform an audience of mainly non-photographers, how to take better photos of themselves, their partners or products they are writing about without the need to buy expensive photographic equipment.

My brief

Ruby Kiddell contacted me asking if I’d be interested in talking at Eroticon. What sort of talk did you have in mind I asked. ‘Well many people want to know how to take better pictures of themselves, their partner or things they are writing about, product reviews for example’ she explained. Count me in I said I’d love to talk on that subject, and so the session was booked.

My approach

Okay, so know your audience is one of the key things, especially to be effective in these short sessions. I’ve been doing research on the other speakers, as well as looking at the work of Ruby and her fellow professional, so I’ve a good idea about the audience. In a nutshell, I’m wanting to help people improve their picture taking without having to spend loads of money, or better still any money, or become techno geeks in the process. Simple tips, ideas and techniques is the name of the game.

Below I’ve jotted down a list of my ideas so far, it’s not in any sort of order, as I said earlier I’m using this list as a brainstorming session on a whiteboard. Some of the ideas will hit the cutting room floor, others will spark of additional ideas, others will form the greater part of the session content. I will be adding to this list over the coming days…

  • Self timers
  • Gorilla pod
  • Light tent for product shots
  • White Balance settings
  • Improving on camera flash
  • white bounce
  • Tin foil bounce
  • Devices to support camera
  • Poor examples verse improved examples
  • Self-taken shots at arms length
  • Do’s and Don’ts
  • Top Tips
  • 10 ways to improve your photographs
  • Show examples of poor verses improved images using data projector
  • Camera phones – the reality
  • Point and shoot cameras
  • Lighting on a budget

Time Lapse Bondage Photography version 2

Hot on the heels of our initial attempt at time lapse photography using the subject matter of bondage, we’ve created another version of it, this time using a real model and changing some of the camera angles and directions of travel.

The changes

We felt that the right to left camera tracking in the first time lapse session was going in the wrong direction, plus the framing was a little too close on the subject towards the end of the video. So in this version we moved the camera further back and set it to track from left to right. A left to right motion is much more pleasing on the eye, mainly due to the fact that the Western world reads from left to right so this path of movement feels much more natural to our eyes and brain. Quite often directors and screen playwrights will want the baddies to come in from the right of frame as it builds tension due to the fact the motion path feels more uncomfortable on our vision – it’s not what we’re used to and can be unsettling.

We also felt the lighting in the first video was a little too bright, so we changed the lights from two ARRI 800w heads to a single ARRI 500w head fitted with a fresnel lens. The kicker light remained to camera left and was a ARRI 150w junior again fitted with a fresnel lens. The other stills camera which was stationary was also moved to a more front on position with a slightly wider framing on it. We spent much more time setting up the framing, focus and motion paths than we did in the first video.

There are still elements of this new video that we are not happy with; Taner wants to smooth out the motion some more and I’m keen to try a longer tie including some suspension. I’m keen to see if we can combine a multi camera set-up and incorporate time lapse and camera tracking shots into the one movie – watch this space…

New version

Time Lapse Bondage Tie version 2

Time lapse Bondage tie with John Tisbury doing rigging and John Tisbury and Taner Tatham doing the photography. This is the next version of the original time lapse we did where we used a mannequin. We feel there are element of both that we like and dislike and I’m sure will make another version which incorporates a different tie which will probably be a suspension.

Original version

Time Lapse Bondage Tie version 1

There’s a blog article I’ve written which details all the camera settings and approach for version 1. We did not change the camera settings for version 2, apart from the aperture due to less light from the single head: Time Lapse Bondage Photography Version 1

Time Lapse Photography Bondage Tie

This post follows on from a post a couple of days ago stating my friend Taner and I were planning to do some Time Lapse Photography which would also include camera movement using the subject as a bondage tie. We spent most of yesterday working on this and I’ve posted a video of the results below. If you’re not familiar with time lapse photography it involves taking a series of still images and then using software to play them back in sequence in quick succession to create a movie, very similar to those old flick books, where’d you’d flick through the pages to see the animation. This session was a practise and experimentation session before we used an actual model for the final film. After about 6 variations on our set-up we managed to come up with an output that we are both very happy with, we’d appreciate your comments and any thoughts too.

Duration, Speed and Intervals

Through trial and error we came up with camera settings that worked for us which I’ve detailed below. To make the finished movie more interesting we wanted to include some camera movement during the sequence. Camera movement was achieved by having the camera mounted onto a motorised slider which in turn was mounted onto a glide track. Below you can see the motor and the silver slider  on to which the camera was mounted, the slider was pulled along by fishing line wound on the pulley which is missing from this image.  The motor rotates very slowly and pulls the slider along the glide track slowly and most importantly very smoothly; a gliding motion helps to iron-out any jerky movements when the film is played back. Taner built the motorised glide track which performed faultlessly.

Motorised glide track built by Taner

The speed of the camera movement needs to be controlled so this was one variable we had to get right. The second variable was the interval in seconds between each shot. Having too longer gap between shots causes jerky movement when played back as there aren’t enough individual images to give a smooth motion. Conversely having too many shots means it takes longer to render in the computer to create the finished movie file. In the end we settled for 1 second between each shot. We started our tests at 4 second intervals but that was just too longer gap between each shot and resulted in very jerky movement between frames. Another variable is the playback frame rate of the finished video, we agreed to set ours at 24 FPS (Frames Per Second) which is the same a normal cinema films. Yet another variable is the shutter speed on the cameras, setting this too fast means each image is sharp which perhaps sounds ideal, however when you blend them together into a sequence it again produces jerky motion. Far better to have a slower shutter speed which has some motion blur allowing each frame to blend better into the next one when they are run as a sequence. Below are two frames from the final film showing the motion blur between consecutive frames on my right arm.

Camera Settings

Time Lapse photography has a major impact on shortening the service life of the shutter mechanism of the camera, for this reason Taner and I used our old backup cameras. The final piece of video which is 1 minute long is made up from 1,000 frames, as we ran two camera positions this meant 2,000 frames in total. With all the practise runs and experimentation we both must have shot about 7,000 plus frames on each camera. With a shutter service life of around 200,000 plus on the D2x that’s probably not that bad, but on a D550 ii’s about half that at 100,000. So you can see if you’re frequently shooting long time lapse sequences you’re soon going to hit that 100,000 or 200,000 threshold. I don’t recommend using your brand new top of the range camera as you’ll soon wear it out.

Nikon D2x and Canon D550

  • Small jpegs
  • White Balance 3200 Kelvin to match ARRI constant lights
  • Shutter speed : 1/10th second
  • Aperture : F14
  • ISO 200
  • Tripod mounted

Erotic Pregnancy Shoot – turning concepts into photographs

Initial discussion

I did a shoot with ERosanne recently, who is in the Third Trimester in her pregnancy and she wanted some erotic pregnant photographs taken. ERosanne is an experienced model who has many contacts and photographer friends, so when we discussed the type of shots she wanted, she mentioned she already had some typical pregnancy shots and wanted something a little more conceptual and erotic. In her words, ‘I have some lovely ‘mumsy’ type shots already and was looking for something a little different’. She mentioned that she wanted to do something with eggs and milk but had not turned those concepts into photographic ideas; her underlying concept was a woman is more than an egg carrier and milk producing machine.

How to turn concepts into photographs

Thankfully I had a couple of weeks to think about the shoot and turn those concepts into photographs. When faced with this problem I let the idea circulate around and look for connections in the props, in this case eggs and milk. There are obvious links to the fertilised egg and breast milk, lactating that sort of thing, but I wanted to tie the idea into a stronger theme.

I use my iPhone at lot at times like these, I create a new Note with the idea or theme as the heading and I jot things down as they come to me, often these ideas are triggered by other events, conversations or just by an idea popping in to my head. I guess subconsciously your brain is still working on the idea, even if you are focusing on something else. I do use brainstorming techniques, or ‘Thought Clouds’ as they are now know in these politically correct times we live in, I’ll cover brainstorming techniques in another blog article.

Over the following days I added a number of entries on the Notes app on my iPhone which I’ve reproduced (no pun intended) below. These are just random thoughts as they come into my head, the important thing is everything I think of in relation to the idea gets noted down no matter how obscure, obtuse or seemingly irrelevant it is.

Notes app on iPhone for collecting ideas

Refining the ideas

When it gets nearer to the shoot date then I will review the list and decide which ideas to expand upon and remove the others. The ones I remove get moved to another Note which I use for a general ongoing list of thoughts and ideas, nothing gets deleted.

The final ideas list is arrived at by a deciding which ideas I want to shoot, which of those ideas will suit this model and will be enhanced by their posing ability, facial expressions, modelling levels, their own creativity and so on. The important point is that for each entry on the list above I have an idea of how I want to shoot it and light it. I think through the idea and consider what would look best. To help you to understand my thought process [best of luck] I’ve detailed the process on how I arrived at the Pregnancy Triptych show below.

Pregnancy Triptych

Pregnancy Triptych

The Pregnancy Triptych shots is derived from idea three on the list:

  • holding eggs one side of tummy, baby in middle, bottle of milk

I wanted to depict the passage of time, the 9 months of pregnancy in a time-line which can be difficult to depict in a single shot, so the idea of two or more images came into my head. I could visualise the eggs in the model’s hand to start with as the first image, the early stage of pregnancy and the fertilisation of the egg. When we came to shoot the idea we also tried some shots with ERosanne holding a dildo in the same hand as the eggs, but that didn’t really look right as it tended to look like a dildo with a massive pair of testicles attached to it. I wanted to keep the first items of the idea on the left-hand side of the frame to help portray the passage of time across the frames, so didn’t want to use ERosanne’s left-hand for the dildo, so we settled on the glass of milk which depicted the change in the woman’s body and the start of milk generation. I understand that one of the earliest clues you’re pregnant is the woman’s tender, swollen breasts, caused by hormones surging through her body. Notice also that we started with two eggs in ERosanne’s hand and then swapped to a single egg for the remaining shots which is intended to show the percentage success rates involved with getting pregnant during ovulation.

In the next image I wanted to show the idea of the egg multiplying and we decided that breaking the egg was the best way to show this as it demonstrated the contents expanding and growing. I asked ERosanne to break the egg in her hand, but it proved rather more difficult, try it, it was quite difficult to crush an egg in your palm with one hand. In the end I pushed my thumbnail into the egg to crack the shell. We also tipped the milk glass more to show the build up of milk and the fact it was almost lactating.

In the end I settled on three images as I wanted the milk dribbling out of the glass on the final shot, so a Triptych it ended up as. The final shot was the egg was dripping more form ERosanne’s hand while she poured milk from the glass in her other hand. Notice too the slight change in hand position, the milk hand is higher, showing a higher milk yeild, whilst the egg hand is lower, showing the turning and dropping of the baby before birth. The last stage was to combine the three images into a single image which was done in Photoshop.

Finally, below is a gallery of the edited shots from that 2 hour session, note the gallery only shows two of the three images used

Time-lapse with camera movement

My friend Taner and I will be having a play over Christmas and the New Year with some Time Lapse photography. We’ve both done time-lapse before with a static camera on a tripod but we wanted to include some camera movement to add another dimension and give added interest to the final short film. Taner has adapted his slider to incorporate a motor and geared belt drive which is manually controlled to speed-up or slow-down the camera as it tracks along the glide track.

We have set aside a whole day to eat cake and test out the new rig and see what results we get. We both have ‘old’ spare cameras that we will be using as time-lapse does put heavy wear and tear on the shutter mechanism and you don’t need a massive mega pixel camera as the product is usually destined for a website.

We plan to run two cameras and two laptops to make best use of the time, this will allow one set up to record whilst the other laptop is rendering and organising the clips from the previously recorded time-lapse session. I’ll post in a couple of days on how we got on.

Post Erotica 2011 show

It’s been a just over a week since Erotica 2011 at Olympia, London. It was great to meet old friends and catch up, but also to meet many online friends for the first time. A massive thank you to all of you who popped by, who purchased items from me and helped to make the show a very successful one for me.

I’ve included some images taken during the Erotica 3 days, they include Joceline Brooke Hamilton and Blue Sapphire who helped to ‘man’ my stand and talk to my customers, plus one or two images of customers who purchased items.

It’s great to show your work at a show like Erotica, but even more so when people buy your work and book you for private commissions and tuition. I’m looking forward to running some fantastic tuition sessions and shooting some wonderful images for customers who booked private commissions with me.

I’m already planning for Erotica 2012, see you there…

Erotica 2011 preparations start in earnest

I’ve pulled together a plan for my stand at Erotica 2011 which is being held at Olympia, London on 18th – 20th November 2011. This will be my fifth year of exhibiting at the show although it will be slightly different this year for a number of reasons:

  • The Art Gallery has been placed upstairs this year. Not sure how this will affect sales and footfall. For the past 4 years the Art Gallery was the first thing you saw when you came in through the doors
  • I will have two models on the stand all weekend, Joceline Brooke Hamilton and Blue Sapphire
  • I will be changing the look and layout of my stand. I’m still going with the 10 metres of gallery wall but instead of filling it wall-to-wall with prints, I want to highlight some of my other services, namely the Photography Tuition and Boudoir services, a little stronger than I have in the past

I know they say in motor racing to only change one thing at a time so you can compare and make sensible comparisons. But I felt as there was going to be a major location change it’s like starting from fresh anyway. Most people knew where my stand was and now I’m starting again location wise. So I though I’d hire two models for the weekend, both of whom will have loads of prints of themselves shot by me plus copies of their exclusive books for sale. They will be happy to sign any purchased you make from my stand.

  • Many of my prints will not have been seen before
  • I’m going to bring less stock but have a wider range of prints available
  • I will have 2 new books available for sale

  • And a new book of photographic work I’ve done with model BlueSapphire, preview the first 15 pages on Blurb:

http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2583618?ce=blurb_ew&utm_source=widget

I’m looking forward to seeing you all at Erotica, so if you’re planning to be there, please drop by my stand and say hi.
